Stately homes along a tree-lined street make way for The Mary J. Drexel Home, a beautiful century-old estate. A privately rented cottage shares the eleven wooded acres that comprise the campus. A three-story manor provides some assisted living accommodations, with additional assisted living and skilled nursing rooms in connected low-rise buildings. Red rooftops and window shutters give the structures a quaint residential feel. Flower boxes lend color to a patio off the main lobby, where residents enjoy barbecues and chat with friends. Fenced-in areas provide boundaries for residents who may wander, although open land, where deer sometimes roam, permeates the space. The entire facility is currently undergoing a major renovation. The skilled nursing unit will be restructured using the Green House program, in which a cottage with ten beds utilizes its own dining, activity and medication rooms and functions independently of other cottages. Skilled nursing residents currently live in rooms with tile floors and built-in entertainment centers. We observed content-looking residents in wheelchairs scooting through the buildings with vigor on our visit. The main lobby, with its marble floor and antique furnishings, reflects the magnificence of the manor's exterior. The lobby opens to a living room with a massive spiral staircase and a chapel to the left. Various living rooms, a library and a solarium invite socialization. Skilled nursing residents and their assisted living counterparts enjoy meals together in one dining room. Those who need feeding assistance have access to a small dining room in the skilled nursing unit that is also used for activities. A separate therapy room accommodates physical therapy sessions.
