A dark canvas awning skirts the warm yellow exterior of Queens Center for Rehabilitation and Residential Healthcare, and tall trees shade the green expanse out front. A mix of fluorescent and natural light brighten the interior. An upcoming remodeling project is slated to include more modern light fixtures. While the narrow hallways are a product of the older architectural design, they are wide enough to accommodate residents in wheelchairs. The nursing station adjacent to the elevator allows staff members to monitor the comings and goings of residents and visitors. Residents' rooms are wallpapered in a soft peach hue. All rooms are equipped with TVs and large-buttoned phones. Residents love the in-house channel, which features the movie being shown in the downstairs common area; this way, they can enjoy the same luxury without leaving the comfort of their rooms. The snug first floor dining area doubles as an activity room; it is equipped with mobile tables that can be rearranged according to space requirements. A small dayroom is available on each floor. The renovation promises a spacious area for activities. The new therapy area is also thanks to the remodel; the space was outfitted with sufficient equipment and pretty flowers and plants. The modern-looking kitchen was in the last stages of construction at the time of our visit. Sadly, we missed the unveiling of the new outdoor patio. Alert residents and an engaging staff make for an active environment. The center's health care offerings include wound care, tracheal care and palliative care, as well as occupational and physical therapies. New residents are paired up with a "greeter" on their first day at the facility to help facilitate a smooth transition. The center also provides a free family shuttle for loved ones living in Queens. It is plain to see that management and staff genuinely care about residents' needs.
