Staff interaction with residents of Silver Lake Specialized Care Center is its top selling point. We observed a wonderful comraderie between the two groups and were touched by the staff's concern for residents' well-being. The director of social services shared a personal experience with us, recalling when her grandmother was a resident here, and telling us that she could not have been happier with the level of care and compassion that was shown her loved one. We were also delighted to overhear the director passing along a phone message complimenting a particularly well-appreciated nurse's aide. Silver Lake Specialized Care Center sits atop a hill in a mostly quiet residential area. The lovely outdoor patio area is attractively landscaped with manicured shrubs and trees. Benches and chairs provide plenty of seating around coordinating tables. A canopy next to the building provides a shady spot for residents and families to spend time together in nice weather. The foliage provides a good degree of privacy from the street. Décor throughout the facility is spare but homey, with attractive wallpaper, tile floors and limited artwork on the walls. The center itself is like the furnishings within: comfortable and in decent condition, but could stand a face-lift. Resident rooms and bathrooms are moderately sized. The dayrooms are used for dining and activities, along with the main dining hall. Silver Lake offers an excellent activities program, which includes field trips, entertainment, pet therapy and a cookbook project—in addition to five evening activites per week! A resident council, resident food committee and a family council provide forums for information exchange and interaction.
