Just a few steps away from New York Bay with its fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline, this facility sits on a well-traveled residential street. Vanderbilt's hotel-like appearance captures the eye with initialed maroon canopies and a delightful mix of trees and shrubs. Inside, the mostly maroon lobby is augmented by leather couches and chairs. Framed artwork adds a stylish air. Residents' rooms are moderately sized to large, with contemporary wood furnishings. The healthy combination of natural and fluorescent light alongside personal touches like photographs creates a pleasing atmosphere. In the dining room, sheer white curtains act as a hand held up against the flood of natural light. The extremely vivid wallpaper print creates an intense sweep of color throughout the room; some might consider it a bit loud. Each floor has a dayroom with wallpaper similar to the main dining room. The facility was scheduled for a major refurbishment when we visited. The tented patio provides a contemplative place for residents among its many tables, chairs and benches. In warmer months, residents tend the nearby vegetable garden. The fruits (or veggies, in this case) of their labor make their way onto the facility's menu. Crafts, pet visits and trivia games keep residents busy. Religious services ensure that they maintain their spiritual health. Passing one of the dayrooms, we spied a friendly embrace between two staff members: each thanked the other for being helpful and supportive. The staff's teamwork and competence work in tandem to create a cheerful, balanced atmosphere. Respiratory therapists staff the ventilator unit around-the-clock. New Vanderbilt also provides peritoneal dialysis and tracheostomy care.
