Adjacent to the boardwalk and beach, Park Center lies in a sleepy section of the Rockaways. Several flower boxes line the entrance. Electric doors open to reveal beige terrazzo floors, light green walls and innumerable potted flowers in the first vestibule. Going forward, the lobby's wood moldings contrast nicely with mauve wallpaper. Greens and grays dominate residents' rooms, where all of the furnishings are dark wood. Bulletin boards, artwork and family photographs personalize the space. In the dining room, yellow and white walls punctuated by blue and white floors create an upbeat atmosphere. On the first floor, a large activity space is in step with the earth tones of the lobby: green and white wall coverings include a green leaf wallpaper border. A big-screen TV and stereo occupy one corner. Each floor has a small lounge decked in calming blue. Several concrete walkways snake around the grassy area outside and flower boxes dot the edges of the garden along with small trees. In warmer months, shaded seating makes it a pleasant place to relax. The area is secured by a chain-link fence. The sounds of chattering, spirited table games and television programs were audible throughout our tour. Genuine concern marked staff's interactions with residents. Some staffers have tenure of more than twenty years! Perhaps the biggest vote of confidence is that some employees' family members live here. Besides the basic intergenerational exercise, arts and crafts and music programs, Park Center provides a few more unusual options. Theme days recreate international travel without the jet lag: videos, accompanied by food and music, "introduce" residents to a new country each time. Apples are plucked, restaurants are visited and the ballet is watched as part of outdoor field trips. Resident fashion shows and family dinners keep things convivial. Onsite medical offerings include ear, nose and throat, dental, optometry, podiatry and psychiatry services.
