East 5th Street, home to Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, boasts a community that is richly diverse across cultural, socioeconomic and generational lines. A deep blue awning marks the entrance. Inside, pink and peach hues blend elegantly with forest green accents. The facility is suffused throughout with warm artificial lighting. Residents' room sizes vary based on the number of occupants, but all are spacious and sunny. Each room is equipped with a pine cabinet that residents use to showcase personal knickknacks. Every floor has its own nursing station and dining and common areas. The comfortably furnished nursing stations facilitate group interaction. The homey main dining and common areas, where group activities take place, are much more spacious than the ones on each floor. A lovely chapel is available for worship services and the furnished patio hosts the ever-popular summer barbecues. The rehabilitation room accommodates speech, occupational and physical therapy sessions. Most Cabrini residents are still active and frequently make use of the rehabilitative equipment. Those who are more frail enjoy therapeutic activities under staff supervision. The activity calendar is brimming with variety; from religious and cultural activities to current events and visits from local high school students, residents are kept busy and are well-entertained. As we waited for our tour guide, we overhead a younger resident (perhaps in his fifties) addressing his laundry service inquiries to the security guard. The guard kindly coached the gentleman on the proper channels to seek for help, suggesting that he follow up with a staff nurse or social worker. The guard's willingness to help is just one example that reflects the facility's caring and supportive culture.
