The Village at 46th & Ten, a multihued stone building, sits on a major thoroughfare near three of New York's premiere attractions: Times Square, the Theater District and "Restaurant Row." In addition to the assisted living facility, the nonprofit Village Care of New York offers adult day health centers, in-home care, rehabilitation services and a skilled nursing facility.

The bright interior blends a pastel palette and light wood furnishings with flower arrangements and petite trees. Sunlight supplements the muted lighting from lamps and sconces. The modern décor features tasteful upholstery, drapes and tablecloths. Common areas include a computer-equipped library and an activity room outfitted with exercise equipment. Our guide told that there are plans to brighten the hallways—the current color schemes that help residents find their rooms also tend to make the space dim. Residents enjoy a great deal of space (a treat in Manhattan!) in their sunny, unfurnished apartments, where generously sized closets, bathrooms and windows add additional appeal. Although the main dining room is graced with lovely furnishings and linen-draped tables, many residents prefer relax in front of the TV while they eat, so they take to a second dining area—an informal space that features a big-screen. On the day of our visit, the light lunch was comprised of soup and chicken with vegetables. The chefs happily accommodate residents' individual preferences. Most choose to take breakfast and lunch on their own, as only one meal per day is included in the monthly fee. Three meals a day are available for an additional cost. The dining area opens to an expansive rooftop garden, where the staff plans to add plants and flowerboxes to make the space even more inviting.

Computer classes and the weekly cocktail party both garner a wide attendance. Residents also enjoy yoga, meditation, exercise, art classes and religious services. The active population, an equal mix of men and women, is an assortment of retired artists, teachers, writers and theater actors. The attractively attired group clearly takes great pride in their appearance. Our guide described one gentleman as the facility's "major salesperson" because he enjoys the place so much that he joins potential residents and their families as they tour to encourage them to move in!
