At Lott Assisted Living Residence, all personal care is included in the monthly rate, whether residents require an hour a day or around-the-clock assistance. The staff will assist residents who have spent down their assets to obtain Medicaid so that they may continue to stay. Our guide informed us that they receive many referrals from other upscale assisted living facilities when their private pay residents can no longer afford to pay.The pale gray stone building borders Central Park on Fifth Avenue, at the northernmost end of Museum Mile, an area that is home to some of the most venerable art and cultural institutions of the City. Residents are required to sign out whenever they leave the facility and sign in upon return. Comfortable seating arrangements in the lobby and first floor common area encourage socialization. Lamps and chandeliers reflect a classic style, while wall sconces and natural light help brighten the home. Framed artwork and posters add to the casual décor. The cozy library entertains residents with a TV, computers, books and games. During our tour, we came upon a vast, sunny activity room that reminded us of a small ballroom; the elegant space is used for group activities. Residents have convenient access to the onsite medical suite and wellness center. A bank of windows in the modestly sized studio we visited showcased views of Central Park. The apartments are unfurnished but the facility can provide beds, dressers and TVs if desired. Shower stalls with low sides and built-in seats outfit the state-of-the-art bathrooms. French doors open to the formal dining room, where crystal chandeliers sparkle above linen-draped tables. Residents linger over cocktails at an elegant bar in one corner. Regular grocery trips allow residents to stock up on their favorite snacks. As we passed one gentleman eating an appetizing lunch, our guide greeted him by name and affectionately rubbed his head. We spoke to four women, three of whom declared it a beautiful day but a good one to stay indoors. "Not me. I'm going out," said the fourth, who, according to our guide, takes walks every day.Towering apartment buildings surround the red brick patio, creating the impression of a secret garden, where contemporary furnishings underscore the appeal. The facility's location encourages stimulating outings to any number of museums as well as Central Park. Residents delight in entertainment from the Manhattan School of Music. Other activities include exercise, bingo, pet therapy, birthday parties, religious services, lectures on wellness and a men's club, as well as trips to shopping malls, movies, restaurants and Lincoln Center.
