The Hallmark of Battery Park City is harbored in a newly developed residential area. Small retailers are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, which enjoys safety thanks to private security and regular NYPD patrols. Just one block from the facility is a park that borders the Hudson River. A massive flower arrangement caught our eyes in the foyer, which sparkles beneath a chandelier. The wood paneled walls are hung with paintings reminiscent of those by the Dutch masters. A smattering of chairs and sofas offer firm seating.

Lighting throughout the interior is bright and tranquil. The gracious living room has views of the garden, while computers outfit the sunny library. Residents watch movies and exercise in the large activity room. A smaller one hosts games and discussions. The dining area is evocative of an upscale restaurant with its etched glass and wooden partitions. Fine crystal and cutlery grace the linen-draped tables. The extensive menu includes a number of healthful options. The private dining room accesses the outdoor area, where a brick wall and a border of evergreen plants turn the beautiful patio, adorned with benches and a fountain, into an exclusive retreat. We viewed a carpeted one-bedroom apartment with a walk-in closet and large windows. For a fee, staff assists new residents with packing and selling unwanted items prior to moving in. Potential residents may receive help, also for a fee, in choosing which of their furnishings to bring.

Residents rejoice in a plethora of outings such as shopping, dinner at the Algonquin Hotel, and opera, ballet and philharmonic performances. Yoga, painting, tai chi, water aerobics, computer classes and memoir writing are also offered. A group of women gathered around a photo display of the residents as children, delightedly guessing who each person was. The staff members draw little attention to themselves, yet appear quickly when needed. Potential residents should plan early, as The Hallmark of Battery Park City is at capacity with a waiting list—and it wasn't hard to see why!
