The Esplanade, a family-owned business, dwells in one of Manhattan's prime residential neighborhoods. Some of the families from the grand structure's earlier days as an apartment building still reside there. School buses pick up the children each morning; this multigenerational aspect adds to the community-like atmosphere. The facility also features an onsite home health care agency.

Indirect lighting from lamps and overhead fixtures gleams on the dark wood furnishings, which are positioned to encourage socialization. Artwork, flowers and plants complement the elegant décor, a mixture of mellow and bold colors. Sunlight streams in through expansive windows. The facility recently added (in response to an overwhelming request from the men) a newly furnished area to watch sports. The arts and crafts room is another popular spot. Several residents' paintings hang in the facility. The Esplanade's library opens to an appealing rooftop garden where residents often barbecue. The large, sunny bedrooms feature ample closet space and private bathrooms.

Residents feast on kosher meals in the restaurant-like dining room. We observed several chatting over an appetizing lunch. A second dining area is used for feeding assistance. The kitchen staff goes out of their way to accommodate residents' preferences. Our guide told us that one resident craved a dish she described as "farmer's chop suey." Esplanade management overheard her request, obtained a description from her and added it to the menu! Assigned seating at mealtime allows staff to easily monitor residents' presence. Residents and staff become so attached over the years that when staff members leave, it is difficult for both.

The residents, the majority of whom are Jewish, are an independent group who actively seek a variety of social outlets. Among the well-attended activities are discussion groups and performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The recent New Year's Eve party was a major event. A number of residents also enjoy extensive traveling on their own.
