The basement of All Saints Episcopal Church is home to Care Program, an adult day care for seniors with dementia. Upscale apartment buildings and retailers such as Bloomingdale's add to the appeal of the clean and safe neighborhood. Sunlight filters into the spacious main room through glass block windows. Track lighting illuminates the area where participants play games and take meals. Their handmade artwork adorns the walls.During our tour, a group of NYU art therapy students helped participants create art. One student gently encouraged the participants to talk about the work they had displayed on a bulletin board. Afterward, several participants and staff members danced as a guest entertainer played lively music on the baby grand. We were honored to meet a participant who was about to celebrate her 104th birthday! She was friendly and talkative, sharing stories about her two cats. The director was very hands-on, encouraging the participants and engaging them in conversation. In addition to daily music and twice-weekly arts and crafts activities with the art therapy students, participants enjoy exercise and reminiscing.The vitality and involvement of participants brought tears to our eyes—this place is alive!
