Dry Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is situated in a working-class neighborhood less than a block away from bustling Woodhaven Boulevard and within walking distance of Queens Boulevard's shopping district. A receptionist greets visitors in the foyer. The warmth of the fireplace travels around the homey room, an earthy mixture of cushy leather sofas, beige wallpaper, framed paintings, green linoleum and antique furnishings. The noble chime of the grandfather clock can be heard over the excited chatter of residents. Posted on one wall is a list of upcoming activities. The Alzheimer's unit, much like the rest of the facility, features a combination of soft artificial lighting and natural light. The shaded patio accesses the second floor common area. Residents are encouraged to garden in the designated planter. The moderately sized bedrooms are furnished with dark wood pieces. All rooms have windows. Although the Alzheimer's unit is not locked, residents wear Wanderguard accessories to deter unsupervised wandering. Each floor boasts a dining area. The wide hallways are free of clutter to ensure easy passage for residents who use assistive devices. Physical therapy takes place in either of the two rehab areas, both of which are fully equipped. We observed several staff therapists working with residents. Both groups seemed comfortable with each other and were eagerly chatting away. The atmosphere at Dry Harbor is decidedly social.
