The red and beige brick building affixed with a glass-enclosed entry set the stage for our tour of Long Island Care Center. Located in a residential neighborhood, the center's front lawn, rock garden and hedges pave the way to the charming lobby. Shades of pink and green dominate the reception area, which is home to a large grandfather clock. A classic fireplace is flanked by Victorian chairs and a comfortable couch. Letters from former patients (and their family members), singing the praises of staff members who were particularly helpful or kind, are proudly displayed in a book for guests to read. The facility has fairly straightforward décor with mostly bare walls. Plenty of natural light, however, helps offset the lack of luster in the common areas. Each floor has a combined activity and dining room as well as a TV lounge at opposing ends of the long, clean hallways. These spaces get lots of natural light. Residents' shared rooms are moderately sized and have sinks and separate toilets. Strangely, the private rooms are more spacious. Alzheimer's care is provided on a separate floor that has a layout identical to the rest of the facility, save for extra security at the elevator. The rooms on this floor are painted in different colors to aid residents in finding their rooms. A recreation therapist employs fun activities for this special group. Another floor provides care for the large Asian population at the facility, comprised mainly of Chinese residents, with some Korean and Indian residents. These ethnic considerations are reflected in the meals and TV stations on the floor. On our visit, most residents were enjoying lunch, watching TV or relaxing. We spoke to one gentleman seated outside, who seemed quite content with his two years at the center. He was awaiting "new legs" so he could eventually return home. A long, narrow patio enclosed by a white picket fence lets residents enjoy outdoor activities in the summer months.
