Photographs of residents hang outside their bedroom doors. A patchwork quilt of American flags and other pictures, created by residents to commemmorate September 11th, hangs proudly in the lobby. These and other thoughtful decorations add a very personal note to the living environment. Throughout our tour, we noticed staff greeting residents, asking after their well-being and chatting them up. This amiable atmosphere is contained within a red brick building on a busy tree-lined street very close to the beach. A black iron fence encloses the property, and parking is available at a lot across the street. A wheelchair ramp flanks one side of the entrance. Tile floors and wallpaper give the cheerful lobby an upscale feel. A unique circular fish tank embedded within a column extends a warm invitation. Residents' moderately sized rooms showcase light wood furniture and practical vinyl floors set against a light pink backdrop. Coordinating curtains can be drawn to allow daylight in. Some of the rooms feature ocean views! Fluorescent fixtures provide good lighting in the common areas. Each floor has a large dayroom for relaxing and activities. These areas have terrific natural light with windows on three walls. Recessed fluorescent lighting help brighten the spacious dining room, although it has plenty of windows. Teal, beige and gold flowered wallpaper makes a dramatic appearance. On the side of the building is a large concrete patio, where a retractable awning provides pleasant shade. There is also a pretty garden area with trees, shrubs and attractive redwood benches, near the front. Both outdoor spaces are enclosed by a black iron fence. A range of activities are offered, including arts and crafts, musical programs, trivia, current events meetings, pet therapy, gardening and intergenerational programs. Residents also take trips to restaurants, the mall and the racetrack.
