Light traffic cruises by on 23rd Avenue, the tree-lined street that is home to Elmhurst Care Center. The brown exterior is strewn with windows overlooking the circular green expanse out front. Wooden accents in the wall paneling, furnishings and soaring columns impart a nature-like air in the foyer. Staff members graciously welcomed us into the facility. Oversized windows bathe residents' moderately sized rooms in light. Light wood veneer is a recurring theme in the furnishings. Pretty window treatments and bedspreads add homey touches. The prominently located nursing station affords staff members a clear view of residents in the spacious common area. Residents gather in a bright and airy room for meals and activities. Furnished seating areas at the end of each hall are used as quiet reading corners and casual rest stops. The first floor therapy area was bustling with staff members assisting residents when we toured. Various activities attracted large groups of participants in every area—it was a busy day at Elmhurst! In the atrium, skylights shed warm natural light over the comfortable seating area, which can be used year-round. Decorative potted plants are sprinkled among the seating arrangements. Young trees accessorize the furnished outdoor patio, a hotspot in summertime. Elmhurst Care Center boasts a cozy and inviting atmosphere, inside and out.
