Just a few blocks from where the Verrazano Bridge spills into Brooklyn and adjacent to Victory Memorial Hospital, this brick building sits on a busy Bay Ridge street. The facility's affiliation with Victory Memorial Hospital ensures that medical services including audiology, dentistry, ophthalmology and podiatry are provided. Inside, the terrazzo floor in the entry leads into the lobby, where brown leather couches and chairs welcome visitors. Natural light and a high ceiling amplify the space. Both indirect and fluorescent lighting illuminate other parts of the facility. Burgundy and green wallpaper hem in the yellow and light green color scheme. In residents' rooms, a pastel palette updates the traditional furnishings. Plush toys, plants and family photos add character. Blue and neutral colors, accented by yellow columns between room doorways, compose the common areas and hallways. There are two seating areas with wing chairs and end tables in each unit. Light blue and white walls add a cheery air to the dining room; the piano in the corner hints at the room doubling as an activity space. The solarium, which looks out onto the private school campus across the street, is awash in blue, green and peach. A black wrought-iron fence wraps around the patio, where a handful of benches and a few picnic tables are placed between the three large trees and greenery. Residents enjoy a variety of exercise programs. Table games, trivia and reading the newspaper keep residents in communiqué with each other. Pet therapy is quite popular—we noted that photographs of residents with former canine visitor Mugsy have been arranged in a collage. Friendly relations with Poly Prep, the private school, means the facility's field trips include walks to the duck pond on the school's campus. Other options include visiting the circus and local parks. In December, residents very much enjoyed the local Girl Scouts troop, who visited for an intergenerational program of singing and music.
