Rutland Nursing Home is part of the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center campus. Security guards are posted at the gated entrance twenty-four hours a day. The modern frame is studded with large windows and acute angled surfaces. Inside, lovely décor offsets the otherwise institutional-looking facility. One wall features residents' paintings, while another wall is strewn with black-and-white photos of residents and staff. A friendly group of residents introduced themselves to us as we waited for our guide. The spacious bedrooms are immaculate. Each is equipped with new bedside tables and storage cabinets. The warm color scheme is complemented by soft natural light. Fluorescent lighting prevails in the broad hallways. The combined dining and activity room features easy-to-clean linoleum floors and potted greenery. The activities calendar is clearly posted; art activities appear to be the house favorite. Music lovers will be happy to learn that the room is also equipped with a stereo system as well as a piano! A stunning garden is just a few steps away; the expanse revolves around a giant cherry tree. Shaded patio seating and a multitude of walkways make the spot ideal for social visits. Not only did we observe lots of one-on-one interaction between residents and staff, we also noticed that staff members were very attentive to family visitors. Our guide informed us that every year, residents from surrounding facilities join Rutland residents for the highly anticipated summer Olympics—it sounded like a great way to keep residents involved in the larger community.
