Norwegian Christian Home and Health Care Center is striking. The white stone facade is punctuated by tasteful lighting posts and manicured grassy areas. Flowers line the walkways. The entire campus is comprised of three buildings; the skilled nursing facility is in the newer building while the assisted and independent living units reside in renovated historic buildings. The inherent benefit of this setup is that spouses needing different levels of care can easily be accommodated. The interior is remarkably luxurious—redolent of a hotel, even—with soft lighting, high ceilings and neutral shades mixed to great effect. Furnishings are contemporary. A glass inset in the wooden wall dividing the living room and adjacent nurses' station allows the area to be easily monitored by staff. Residents' rooms walk the line between homey and luxury with dark wood, quilted bedspreads and numerous windows. Some look out onto the beautiful inner courtyard. Common rooms reflect similar a similar upscale feel. Both the dining room and dayroom boast floor-to-ceiling windows. Ivory tablecloths and flowers arrangements spruce up the dining room. The dayroom's comfy couches are staggered to allow everyone a good view of the TV. The onsite Heritage Hall and café is home to the Norwegian Museum. Exhibitions change regularly and an opening evening reception takes place when new pieces are introduced. We spotted some chatty residents having tea here and enjoying a view of the outdoor area. Benches abound outdoors, where there is also a large gazebo, concrete walking paths, a pond (complete with fish and turtles in warmer months!) and a waterfall. Residents for the most part were very smartly dressed and the staff was warm and professional. Most have a long tenure at the facility. Activities include bowling, choir practice, shuffleboard and quiz games.
