Cabs Nursing Home is a bright spot in an otherwise run-down part of Bedford Stuyvesant. Attractive green lawns lie just beyond the classic iron fence edging the perimeter. The somewhat worn interior is well-maintained. Residents' small rooms are painted in shades of blue and pink. Several rooms showcased potted plants; all have views of the neighborhood or the gorgeous atrium. The common areas are used for both dining and activities—and are therefore bustling! Large windows allow an abundance of natural light; fluorescent lighting prevails in dimmer areas. The broad hallways feature furnished alcoves and a sunny atrium is another outstanding social spot. The semi-enclosed rooftop protects against harsh weather while offering an open setting, appealing to both the smoking and non-smoking residents who frequently gather here. Residents appeared alert and content and we noted a high level of interaction. Staff members busily distributed medication on our visit. Passing us with her medicine cart, one smiling nurse belted out a hearty "good morning!" as we arrived. In another corner, as a female staffer guided a resident by the hand, he smiled with appreciation. The long tenure of Cabs' management team has strengthened their ties with residents as well as their loved ones. They encourage family visitors to overnight with residents as often as they see fit; roll-out beds are readily available.
