The lovely New England mansion that houses New Fordham Arms is tucked away on a small street in the Bronx. White columns support a balcony above the grand entrance, where the white-trimmed windows contrast strikingly with the building's red facade. The main patio, where barbecue take place in agreeable weather, lies to the left of the entrance. Residents also enjoy access to a smaller patio. Twin beige sofas and glass tables face each other in the foyer, where thriving houseplants add a touch of green. A mirror graces one wall. The soft light suffusing the home is a result of the recently improved electrical system. The bathrooms have been recently remodeled as well.

We passed two residents seated comfortably on a sofa as we traversed the narrow hallways. Others waited quietly for lunch to begin in the intimate dining area. We observed amiable conversations between staff and the highly independent residents, who enjoy individual pursuits such as reading and spend much of their time in their beautifully decorated rooms. The atmosphere is relaxed and quiet. Residents' moderately sized rooms are furnished with specific color themes and coordinating curtains and bedspreads. We glimpsed a floral patterned lampshade among the furnishings in one room; the result was homey and inviting.
