As we approached Bronxwood Home for the Aged, we were greeted by a gentleman feeding a flock of pigeons. The scene was more reminiscent of a regular apartment complex setting than an assisted living facility. The lobby extends into a spacious living room with wall-to-wall carpeting, potted plants and plush seating grouped together in intimate arrangements. A coffee bar hugs one wall. A long hallway hosts several small seating areas, which are outfitted with game tables and chairs.

Walls of windows fill residents' moderately sized rooms with sunlight. The private rooms are on the smaller side. One resident welcomed us warmly to her room, despite short notice. She beamed as she walked us through her living room, bedroom and bathroom, commenting, "You see, I have everything all in one!" We observed a group of residents who had gathered for a movie in one of the common areas. Unfortunately, the patio was closed on our visit, but our guide assured us that it is a big draw in the spring and summer. The lengthy area features gardens and lots of seating. Lunches are a light affair, with soup and sandwiches on the day of our visit. All meals are kosher. Residents enjoy a mid-afternoon snack daily.

We met two women who both praised Bronxwood for its fun-filled activity calendar; one pointed out that the library keeps avid readers entertained. She also described her roommate as "wonderful" and when we met her, we agreed—we were also surprised to find that she was so young—a mere fifty-nine! Residents enjoy frequent outings to Yankee Stadium and Atlantic City. Indoor activities include arts and crafts, tai chi, ceramics, karaoke, dominoes and talent shows.
