This skilled nursing facility is named after the nineteenth-century social activist and founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Frederic Ozanam. Although it is administered by Carmelite nuns, the facility is open to all faiths. The two-acre property hosts multiple structures. Plants soften Ozanam's brick exterior. On our visit, a music therapist was playing his guitar out front. Dark wood paneling, comfortable period furniture and a silk Chinese carpet create a calming, upscale ambience in the entry. Along one wall is a huge fish tank with a giant koi and a tiny crayfish. A fireplace and grandfather clock add to the homey feel. Chandeliers hang in the halls and dining area, which, on our visit, was crowded with residents, family members, recreation assistants and volunteers. Residents' rooms are spacious. Wanderguard bracelets limit unsafe wandering; chair and bed alarms reduce the risk of falls. Ozanam does not use restraints. A spirited game of bingo crowded one of the community rooms on our visit. In addition to the large, bright dining room, the onsite café also serves meals and snacks. Our guide informed us that plans were in place to convert the dining room into office space and to utilize the smaller dining areas on each floor for meals; currently, they are also used to host activities. All of the floors boast a TV room with a small library. Ozanam's chapel is large and quite lovely. Daily mass is broadcast on closed-circuit TV for those who cannot attend. Smokers congregate on the patio. Enclosed by a chain-link fence and shrubs, the grassy area is centered around a religious statue. Potted flowers and wrought iron benches and chairs extend a warm welcome. On our tour, we noted many visitors. A number of residents chatted in the lobby or were engaged in group activities. Some residents were alert and interacting with each other, whereas others were less so; some sat idly and were not responsive to greetings. Volunteers in Loving Spoonfuls aid residents who require feeding assistance. Volunteers also assist with transportation needs. With 600 employees, we were surprised to see the staff interacting like a large family. The admissions coordinator's dedication to patient advocacy was admirable. Ozanam also counts three dogs, several cats and a rabbit among its resident population. Caged birds fill each floor with cheerful twittering. Terminal patients are never alone, thanks to the Sister Rose program, which ensures the companionship of a staff member at all times. Intravenous and peg feeding, along with wound and palliative care, are also available.
