The Sequoias, named after the grand trees of northern California, is a huge community with an equally huge array of services. Housed in two buildings (one twenty-six stories and the other seven) atop Cathedral Hill in San Francisco, the facility offers sweeping views from almost every angle. The staff refers to the community as a "village within a city" and it is easy to see why. Each stage of life has been prepared for at the Sequoias, from independent living, through end-of-life. An on-site medical clinic is staffed by doctors, with registered nurses who are available around-the-clock. An adult day care center complements the assisted living program. It includes a family meeting room for private conferences or celebrations. The wing also includes a solarium with a garden deck, patio seating, excellent views and sunshine. The assisted living, skilled nursing and dementia care areas are housed on the fourth and fifth floor of the larger building. The skilled nursing area looks institutional due to safety precautions many of which, such as windows not opening and no patios, result from its location. The skilled nursing section has separate dining rooms and special programming to meet the needs of dementia residents in addition to an onsite adult day care center. Throughout our last tour, we noted staff were friendly in all levels of care and attentive to all residents. There is a multitude of activities to choose from at the Sequoias, including lectures on "Jack London's San Francisco", piano concerts, wide-screen films, dramatic readings, or resident council meetings. There are even rooms dedicated for the pursuit of personal hobbies, including an art studio, a sewing center, a woodworking shop, a fully equipped office, a game room and a library. Nondenominational services are held on Sunday afternoons in the chapel. The Rotunda features a monthly rotating art show; it is a lovely room for social gatherings and private parties. Personal banking services are offered biweekly. Dining is an event in itself here. For fitness-minded individuals, there is a full gym and exercise room with a physical therapist and a personal trainer. Adjacent to The Sequoias is a private health club with swimming facilities.
