The décor in Swindells, a newly renovated facility, brings to mind a fancy restaurant, with its attractive light-colored wood, and dining area that features modern but comfortable seating, skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. Participants' art projects line the interior. There is an outdoor garden as well. The program is housed inside the California Pacific Medical Center, in San Francisco's Laurel Heights, and is run by the respected Institute on Aging. Clients are responsive and smiling. Swindells accepts all ages eighteen and up, although most participants are over sixty.The focus of the program is on preventative treatment. Activities include "brain" games such as word association, word puzzles, and memory trivia, in an effort to slow the effects of Alzheimer's. Arts and crafts, bowling, exercise, music, bingo and walking are some of the other activities on the monthly calendar.
