Golden Gate Day Health is housed in an attractive new building of polished granite, green double windows, and cream-colored accents; the architectural fence and curving window bars add elements of safety and style. There is a lovely courtyard where the clients participate in the daily walking club. The hustle and bustle of downtown is forgotten as soon as one walks through the gate. The spacious interior is well lit due to an abundance of windows; it is clean, neat and pleasant inside. The building is owned by the respected St. Anthony's Foundation, which also runs the Madonna House shelter for women in the same building.On our last tour we entered through the green metal gate into the courtyard, where music played and participants—and even some staffers—were dancing alone or with partners surrounded by several camellia bushes in full bloom. Later we toured the main activity room where most participants played blackjack. A women's group, Chinese group, and Filipino group offer comfortable and supportive settings for those who choose to participate. The activity calendar lists arts and crafts, exercise, bingo, and music. Some products from the knitting and crocheting club adorn the walls.Throughout our tour residents appeared very comfortable in the supportive and caring environment. The onstaff social worker assists participants with housing options and placement, documentation for benefit eligibility and provides emotional support along with advocacy for participants. In fact, she even made it possible for one participant to bring her pooch to the program! Free transportation is provided to and from the program.
