Shady Lane Rest Home is a bright spot on Napa Street. The furnished patio fronting the entrance is an attractive area for outdoor lounging. Inside, visitors are promptly greeted by the administrator, Mr. Chang, whose desk is stationed in the lobby. The small room next to the lobby is currently a well-kept storage area; however, Mr. Chang informed us that remodeling plans will result in a more efficient space.

Residents' rooms feature new, easy-to-clean wooden floors. All of the rooms are flushed with natural light. The living room features comfortable couches and chairs arranged in front of a TV. Some residents take to the nearby treadmill to squeeze in a little exercise while watching their favorite programs. The dining area is furnished with several wooden tables; artificial flowers add hints of color. Sweeping sunlight brightens the building.

Residents enjoy an expansive outdoor area with bench seating. Although there was minimal landscaping at the time of our visit, upcoming plans for a Japanese garden have piqued residents' interest! Shady Lane employs a part-time activity coordinator, which is unusual
at such a small facility. The coordinator limits activities to mainstays such as bingo, exercise and arts and crafts in order to accommodate the community's diverse cultural and language needs. As a smaller community, Shady Lane residents also benefit from more one-on-one care. Mr. Chang's LVN background has greatly influenced his personalized approach to care. In fact, because he lives onsite, Mr. Chang is available to residents twenty-four hours a day.
