Originally the country mansion of a prominent San Francisco family, now remodeled as an assisted living facility, Hopkins Manor maintains a sense of its history in the array of rooms, unexpected nooks and crannies, and well-tended grounds. The gleaming linoleum floors, which are free of rugs, testify to the management's commitment to provide a safe and hygienic environment, while preserving the residence's individuality and historic atmosphere. The furniture is not very stylish, but it is comfortable and practical—a good compromise for a facility that strives to remain affordable.

Located in a pleasant residential neighborhood in sunny Redwood City, Hopkins Manor is close to medical services and a nearby shopping district. Hopkins is a sister facility of nearby Gordon Manor, which specializes in providing care for a population with dementia or other memory impairments. Ongoing education in serving those with memory impairments is provided to staff at both facilities.

We were especially taken with a collection of hand-drawn, personalized caricatures of the residents. Upon inquiring, we learned that they were drawn by an extraordinarily talented staff member. The several volunteers and visiting family members we encountered all reflected the welcoming environment of the facility.

This may be a "just right" facility for persons with unusual combinations of needs, personal interests and modest means. For example, an older couple with clearly evident health needs shared a very large and sunny room, furnished with desks, tables and supplies that allowed them to continue their individual projects.
