Oak Park Convalescent Hospital boasts the tranquility of a residential neighborhood as well as the convenience of an up-and-coming industrial town. The two spacious patio areas fronting the entrance are decked with a pebbled table, semicircular benches, umbrellas and wine barrels filled with potted plants. Fresh plants and silk flower arrangements scattered around the facility complement the earthy interior color scheme. The vivid photographs that adorn the walls are eye-catching. Residents' moderately sized rooms are fully furnished; the pieces are worn but adequate. One of the two dining areas accommodates residents who need feeding assistance, while the other doubles as an activity room. Shelving units stocked with activities and supplies border one wall. An old projector serves residents well on movie nights. Residents, many of whom were in wheelchairs, participated in an exercise class during our visit. The energy level was optimal. The outdoor area is a lovely place for socializing. Shade trees and patio umbrellas work in tandem to protect the porch. Climbing jasmine, various shrubbery and seasonal flowers border the building. Residents often take to the high-back chairs to enjoy the scenery. The hallways are equipped with handrails. One of the hallways, which is slightly extended, hosts a card table, chairs and a small piano. The staff was engaging and helpful. We observed one staff member decorating the private dining area for a resident's family dinner party. Hanging proudly in one of the halls are numerous recognition and service awards, as well as various appreciation certificates that highlight the achievements of this long-tenured staff. Residents seem happy to be a part of this community.
