Fruitvale Health Care Center is located in a low-income neighborhood of Fruitvale. Visitors should plan to visit early, as parking can be difficult and personal safety may be of concern during the evening. The home's interior, however, is warm and welcoming, thanks to mellow lighting and attractive, well-kept furnishings. While we waited for our guide, we assisted one resident who was having difficulty moving her wheelchair. We notified our guide that we had helped the resident, to which our guide replied that the staff encourages residents' independence as much as possible. We did observe staff members assisting other residents during our tour, such as one gentleman who wanted to go outside. The facility provides residents' rooms with comfortable, coordinating furnishings. Fluorescent lights illuminate bulletin boards in residents' rooms, where residents and their families post photographs and notes. Wallpaper colors one wall in each of the rooms. Handrails edge the broad hallways, which are somewhat dim. Fresh flowers adorn the tables in the two smaller dining areas. We met a number of residents who quietly waited for lunch in a third dining room, which is more spacious and frequently hosts activities. Residents enjoy access to the courtyard at the heart of the building, as well as the front porch, where they watch neighborhood activity under staff supervision.
