House of Psalms Residential Care Facility is nestled in the foothills of East Oakland, close to the Mills College campus. Shaded patio furniture fronting the building offers a quiet rest
area. The building's crisp white interior spotlights the tidy reception area. Down the hall, residents gather in a cozy living room with sofas and chairs.

Residents' moderately sized rooms have a homey feel. Neutral-colored walls and pretty borders complement residents' personal furnishings and decorations. Furnished units are also available. The dining area is a bright, open space furnished with three large tables. The dining and living rooms both double as activity areas. Residents are treated to Bible study lessons, Eucharistic services and monthly musical performances facilitated by visiting church groups. Other activities include daily exercise instruction and weekly pet therapy. Residents enjoy occasional field trips to Oakland Museum, Paramount Theater, Chabot Science Center and the zoo.

Several residents hosted family visitors during our visit. Friends and loved ones are an integral part of residents' stay; one staff member commended residents' families for their support and willingness to help in the home. Although many of the staff members are new to House of Psalms, Marie, a facility veteran, could not contain her enthusiasm when speaking about the warm and pleasant interaction between residents and staff.
