This family-owned facility is one of the few in the Oakland area that caters to a Chinese population. Staff turnover is typically due to retirement—such impressive tenure indicates strong job satisfaction. Mirrors line the walls of the spotless entry, where plants and a cockatiel add lively elements. We entered to find a large group of residents enjoying Chinese programming, via satellite, on the big-screen TV in the nearby therapy room.

Square fluorescent fixtures illuminate the mixture of modern and Asian décor. Residents enjoy two homey common areas. The vast upstairs living room houses a second big-screen TV as well as an aquarium with large carp. The brown carpet in the hallways is worn, but has been taped over torn areas so that it does not present a tripping hazard. We were pleased to meet one active resident who was exercising in the hallways with her walker. The diverse activity calendar boasts exercise, religious activities, mah-jongg, brush painting and outings to the opera. A walkway runs the length of the well-maintained backyard. The facility houses three dining areas, one of which is used for feeding assistance. The chef prepares Chinese food almost exclusively.

Evergreen maintains a resident population that is much lower than their license allows, so residents have ample personal space. The elevator accesses their sunny second-floor rooms, which are furnished by the facility. A handful feature private bathrooms.
