Lifelong Medical is situated on MacArthur Boulevard, just off of Highway 580. The program has broadened its constituency since opening two years ago; it now serves adults eighteen and older. The main common area is utilized for dining services and group activities. Separate meeting rooms, rehabilitation rooms and nursing areas flank the common area. The program has specialized lift equipment to safely accommodate participants in wheelchairs. Personal grooming services are available onsite as well. Regular scheduled activities include bingo, table games, a men's group and a women's group, reminiscence, Bible study and community choir. Occupational and physical therapy aides direct the fitness instruction. At the time of our visit, participants were hosting an arts and crafts bizarre; all proceeds were donated to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The community at Lifelong Medical, although diverse in culture and age, is a familial one. We observed a candid and touching display of affection as a staff member greeted one participant with a hug and a kiss—the participant beamed with gratitude.
