Hong Fook Center—Harrison Street shares the historic Hotel Oakland location with its sister adult day health care center. The Chinatown neighborhood exudes a tangible sense of community to the center's predominately Chinese and Vietnamese constituency. High ceilings impart a regal quality, highlighting detailed moldings in the building's framework. Soft overhead lighting, complemented by rich wooden wall paneling, radiates homeyness. Hanging artwork from the calligraphy and painting activities are elegant wall dressings that personalize the space. Hong Fook—Harrison Street is somewhat smaller than its sister program, with only 110 participants compared to 256; however, activities are the mainstay of this vibrant community. Cooking, music classes, arts and crafts, dancing and table games—all are weekly events. The program features extensive health care services: medicine management and daily health screenings; physical, occupational and speech therapies; dietary and nutrition consultations; and various social services to integrate participants into their communities. During our visit, the lively group was divided into mah-jongg and bingo players. Staff and participants seem to treat each other like family; during our tour, participants casually approached our guide, giving her hugs and sharing personal stories.
