Hong Fook Adult Day Health Care is a crossroads for Oakland's vast Asian community. More like a bustling community center than an adult day care, the center virtually buzzed with energy! Participants vary in independence levels, health status and cognitive abilities. The facility sits behind Hotel Oakland in the city's Chinatown area, just minutes from Lake Merrit. The interior is an impressive space that features fifty-foot ceilings, ornate architectural patterns and natural light that cascades over white walls. Participants consult the daily event calendar and menu posted in the entrance. The program is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The morning group is served breakfast and lunch; a snack and dinner service is offered to afternoon participants. Popular activities include English classes, bingo, dominoes, exercise and karaoke. Mah-jongg is the activity of choice. Occasional group outings to dim sum restaurants and picnics at the lake facilitate greater integration with the community at large. We observed different activities in every corner of the facility. One volunteer entertained an audience of participants with karaoke tunes. Other participants patiently waited for the visiting beautician, who gives free haircuts. The environment at Hong Fook is a boisterous one; the participants are actively and thoroughly engaged in the community.
