The first thing we noticed when we toured this facility was the level of interaction between staff members and residents. One nurse attended to a resident in a wheelchair; another staffer walked the halls side-by-side with a second resident; and a third staff member assisted a resident with medication. At the time of our visit, the huge activity room hosted a sing-along, and residents—including three chirping canaries—appeared to be enjoying themselves. A large aquarium houses a group of goldfish. When not gathered around the piano, residents often watch movies on the big-screen TV, make arts and crafts projects, play bingo and read. Holiday parties and barbecues are special treats. A green awning shades the entrance to the cream-colored building. To the left, a water fountain and gatherings of plants form an island. A few plants border the small patio, furnished with umbrella-topped tables and chairs. Medium-sized resident rooms are decorated with soft floral wallpaper and peach divider curtains. A lavender rug complements the lobby wallpaper. A unique metal chandelier caps off the décor. The rehabilitation program is comprehensive, including physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapies. The innovative programming incorporates four key elements: the Discovery program, which provides forty hours a week of tactile and sensory stimulation for lower-functioning residents; Mind, Body and Soul, a behavioral program of individual and group therapy for aggression intervention; the Hydration program, which charts residents' water intake; and, a weekly family night. Every Thursday, family members visit with the administrator, learning about the daily goings-on at Windsor Gardens.
