This residential neighborhood looks a bit rough around the edges. During our visit, some stripped cars were parked across the street and graffiti marked the bus stop benches. The building's pink exterior is bordered by mint green trim and dark rose flourishes. In the front of the building, a large tree sways in welcome and a walkway leads past outdoor plants to the entryway. The lobby is characterized by its tasteful mahogany furniture. Seasonal and therefore ever-changing décor fills the building. During our tour, a beautiful bouquet sat atop one of the glass and wood tables. Pink valances with matching curtains mark the entrance door. A similar theme carries on throughout the facility: pink dominates, although the white tile floors have a pink and baby blue pattern. There are paintings of flowers throughout the facility. Residents' medium-sized rooms allow for ample personal space. Some rooms are decorated by pink dividers and sheets, whereas others sport mint green color schemes. All are exceptionally clean. Tiny gold chandeliers hang down into the first-floor dining room. From the green-cushioned chairs, residents can enjoy the large floral painting. The hanging mirror serves to open up the room. The dining room on the second floor looks out onto Adams Boulevard. A piano and big-screen TV wait in the wings. The small patio is made from brown granite-like material, and the benches are constructed from a similar material. There is a larger patio as well, with a few plants. Big bulletin boards in front of the nurses' station announce activities and news. Mornings usually see exercise programs, trivia games and current events discussions, whereas afternoon activities include bingo, watching movies and various classes. Weekly religious services see to residents' spiritual needs. Residents seemed to run across a continuum of activity levels. We watched as an activity director played the piano and some residents sat and sang along in energetic bursts of notes; others just watched and listened to the musical mayhem intently. Some residents watched TV in their rooms. We witnessed a caregiver encouraging one resident to join others in the dining area rather than staying in his room. One of the highlights of our tour was meeting a jovial 112-year-old resident who has numerous plaques and awards honoring her as the oldest California resident! Staff development training is conducted monthly.
