View Park Convalescent Hospital sits on the lower end of a hilly residential street, just a quarter mile from Crenshaw Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare. Churches, residences and other senior facilities compose the surrounding area. Although the street is rather quiet, it sees its fair share of traffic. Meticulously maintained plantings cover some of the front lawn, which spans to the sidewalk. The sidewalk is bordered by a grassy section where mature trees stretch their limbs. A dark mansard roof contrasts the building's beige exterior. The vast entry hall, with a high ceiling, an asphalt tile floor and chairs, has windows on either side of the wood-faced double doors. Underneath a large mantelpiece, a painted wood fire "crackles" in silent stillness, a pretty replacement for the real deal. Resident rooms start just beyond the nurses' station. We found them to be homey, with floral quilts, small writing desks and wood cabinets. Shared rooms overlook the concrete center patio, which is dotted with potted plants, umbrella-topped tables and chairs. Some rooms have sliding-glass doors for direct access. Two bright dining rooms also accommodate activities, including exercise, arts and crafts, bingo, music appreciation classes and live entertainment. Groups are separated based on level of awareness and functioning. The larger dining room also overlooks the concrete patio. The smaller dining room in the back of the building is ideally situated for admiring the views of downtown LA and Hollywood. When family comes to visit, they often use one of the dining rooms for private time with their loved one. Residents range in age from mid-50s to 104, and the majority stay long-term. Even the residents in wheelchairs appeared lively, pleasantly interacting with staff members. The administrator, who led our tour, told us he'd only been on the job for a month. We were delighted to note that he was still able to greet all the residents we encountered by name.
