This facility sits on a seven-acre lot in a gated community, which formerly was the Ramsay-Durfee Estate. There are three sister facilities on the same property. The light yellow exterior is topped by an orange roof. The grounds resemble a well-sculpted park with multiple trees, plants and colorful flowers surrounding a fountain. Skilled nursing is on the second and third floors, and the specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care unit occupies the first. During our tour, we met many of the personable staffers: one is a priest who, through fundraising efforts, was able to build the facility. He has worked here for over sixty years and has seen the facility grow from its original twenty residents. We also noted that residents seemed quite content: it is obvious that staffers' greatest commitment is to provide the best in compassionate care. In the lobby, yellow and orange dots burst forth from the olive green carpeting. Light wood chairs proffer seating options and two large plants are stationed on opposite sides. One wall houses a large crucifixion scene along with a painting of an angel. A smaller lobby is marked by a mantel topped by silk flowers. Residents' rooms look like studio apartments with their spacious carpeted interiors. Some even boast two windows. The look is decidedly homey—many residents bring in personal items like photographs and memorabilia that add to this effect. The dining room's spaciousness, multiple plants and wooden furnishings reminded us of an elegant but comfortable restaurant-like atmosphere. Round ceiling lamps add more style. Other common rooms include a large chapel and lounges furnished with comfortable sofa chairs and big-screen TVs. The facility encircles an outdoor patio that boasts a handful of trees and a fountain at its center. Park benches and chairs beckon residents to enjoy this delightful area. Some residents take advantage of the small park that is tucked into the northeast corner of the property. Staff encourages residents who enjoy gardening to plant whatever they choose in the garden area. In the specialized dementia unit, lighting is intentionally subdued and carpeting is also a bit dark. Walls are a creamy off-white color. The residents' rooms are also spacious, but the dining room is diminutive. Activities in this portion of the facility are similar to the main programming in that they include games, exercise, arts and crafts, and sing-alongs, but all are specifically geared toward a population with dementia. Codes for this locked area are changed regularly to keep residents safe.
