This brick and stucco building is at home among mature palms and neatly trimmed ficus trees. A small lawn carpets the front yard. Bustling Santa Monica Boulevard is two blocks away as is Los Angeles Veterans Administrations Hospital, set amid ardent rolling acres of grass. Past double glass doors is the facility's lobby, where comfortable furniture and plenty of magazines are at the ready for visitors. The somewhat institutional-looking décor is nonetheless functional. Cream-colored walls mirror the cleanliness of this well-maintained facility. During our visit, the dining room was in full swing for lunch. Most residents were wearing daytime clothes as opposed to hospital gowns. We were told residents may take lunch here, in their rooms or on the enclosed outdoor patio. Potted plants and umbrella-topped tables enliven the ample space; residents come here to enjoy the fresh air. Hospital-like resident rooms have linoleum floors and privacy curtains. There is plenty of room for personal belongings. TVs find a natural home atop each resident's clothing cabinet. Large windows peek out onto the patio, and allow natural light to filter into the rooms.
