In addition to skilled nursing services, Kingsley Manor offers independent and assisted living accommodations. The campus is situated on a side street not too far from a busy part of town. Cracks run through the sidewalks, and the area homes and streets are rundown. While the neighborhood is somewhat lacking in appeal, and might not be the safest area for evening strolls, Kingsley's four-acre property is another story. Assorted flowers and plants add a layer of color to the vast front lawn. Ivy climbs the brick exterior. Since we visited during winter, we could only imagine the lush rose gardens and the annual August luau. Residents enjoy socializing outside at many comfortable spots. An atrium sits in front of Leitzell Hall, the independent living structure, which features immense hand-painted brick pillars. Beyond the main building, colored lines on the cement act as breadcrumb trails to each building; a red line leads to the skilled nursing facility. Since our visit, the facility has undergone a facelift that included new floors, new wallpaper in residents' rooms and fresh paint in various common areas. Each of the four stories now has security cameras. The first floor houses assisted living residents and the second and third floors accommodate skilled nursing. An elevator provides easy access to the different sections. The skilled nursing floors contain both private and shared rooms with linoleum floors. Low beds minimize falls. Residents were relaxing in their rooms waiting for dinner as we toured the unit. Meals are delivered from the main dining hall so residents can eat in their rooms. We watched as one staffer patiently helped feed a resident who needed some assistance. Lunch is usually served in the top-floor activity room. Residents use a small, attractively appointed dining room for private dinners with family members. Covered tables with floral centerpieces, a big-screen TV and a piano fill the space. A huge sliding glass door—which encompasses an entire wall—leads to a vast balcony brimming with flowers and plants. Green patio furniture provides seating. From this vantage point of the Hollywood Hills, the sunset is majestic. Rehab Alliance, a company that provides rehabilitative services, collaborates with the facility to offer residents a strong therapy program. Many activities take place in Holly Cottage, which is equipped with an old-fashioned popcorn maker, a billiard table and computers in a separate room. While the independent living residents seem to get the most use out of the cottage, everyone within the community is welcome to attend. Some activities include adult education classes, sensory sessions, discovery club meetings and gatherings for coffee and donuts. The campus also features a gym, a health clinic, a library and a gothic chapel. Although the care center does not utilize a wander management system, residents with dementia are welcome so long as they are not prone to wandering.
