Hancock Park Rehabilitation Center shares a plot of land with its affiliated assisted living facility in a conveniently located middle-class neighborhood. With Melrose boutiques and the shops at The Grove and the Beverly Center close by, the area is exciting and busy. During our visit, we admired the simple beauty of colorful leaves scattered around the simple white building. The patio, bordered by flowers and bushes, appeared to be a popular spot for residents, with shaded tables and plenty of seating. The recently renovated interior is far more intricate than one would imagine from the outside. Earth tones beautify the walls and furniture, complementing the dark hardwood floors. Unique ceiling lights hang in the lobby, with a sturdy, glass-topped coffee table at its center. Two rooms, also with hardwood floors, host dining and activities. The larger one contains a big-screen TV, and both display seasonal décor as well as bulletin boards posted with announcements. The physical therapy room is remarkable; inside, residents have use of a variety of equipment, the oddest of which is the shell of a car! It has proven invaluable for those who need to relearn how to enter and exit a vehicle. The occupational therapy experience is also hands-on—a washer, dryer and bed create a homelike atmosphere in a separate room, where residents actually apply the exercises they have relearned. Part of this room is set up like a grocery store, so residents can practice reaching for items. The living quarters are spacious, with moderately sized bathrooms. Matching bedding and window treatments create a homey feel. Subacute residents, most on ventilators, occupy their own wing.
