Garden Crest Convalescent Hospital is the perfect venue in which to admire the Los Angeles cityscape—from the comfort of the outdoor veranda. Nestled in the hills of the Silver Lake district, the neighborhood is safe for walking and only minutes away from several medical centers. The property is picturesque with a mixture of palm and shade trees, budding gardens and ample greenery. A somewhat steep ramp leads from the parking lot to the patio, which brims with colorful plants. Residents sitting there welcomed us when we arrived. Taking in the whole scene—the attractive patio furniture, the verdant grass—we were tempted to join them for some rest and relaxation! The facility is family owned and has had only two administrators since opening fifty years ago. We spoke to one of the friendly staff members who told us a little about her twelve years at Garden Crest—she had only good things to say about her work and the joy it has brought her. The interior is homey and warm. Framed artwork lines the walls, which are frequently repainted. The physical therapy room appeared neat and organized. One nice provision for staff is the lounge, located in an isolated wing. The multipurpose room, used for meals, activities and parties, has many windows with spectacular city views. Residents' photographs and a large activities calendar hang on one wall. Activities include gospel singing, religious services, reading, coffee and news sessions, various board games and parties with family members. Round tables are set up to encourage group discussions. We found a large gathering of cheerful residents chatting here. They appeared well-groomed and nicely dressed. Two residents, one with severe cognitive impairment, were lying in hospital beds in the multipurpose room. It was great to see them socializing and involved with their peers. One of the two residents spoke highly of the staff and the program, and cited the facility's location as a highlight. Accommodations are moderately sized with windows and linoleum floors. Each resident has his or her own TV. Each room has its own heating and cooling system. Privacy curtains separate electronically controlled hospital beds. We noticed personal belongings, including family photographs and artwork, placed throughout. The extensive list of on-site services includes case management, counseling, dentistry, diagnostic ultrasound, IV therapy, optometry, pharmaceutical services, podiatry, and physical, speech and occupational therapies.
