Situated adjacent to Grandview Palms Senior Living Community, its affiliated assisted living facility, Culver West Convalescent Hospital is surrounded by apartment buildings and homes. The one-story stucco building has a brick facade and an enclosed brick patio with seating and potted plants out front. Awnings cover the entrance and front windows. Wood furnishings top the decorative burgundy tile flooring in the entryway, which leads to the living room. Sofas, a big-screen TV and a great wooden table fill the living room; a fireplace adds ambience. The effect is warm and attractive. When someone wants a little sunlight, the patio off the living room is the perfect spot. Umbrella-topped tables, chairs and potted plants create a peaceful environment in which to enjoy some fresh air. There are two dining rooms, the smaller of which seats around twelve residents. The larger dining room is reserved for those who require feeding assistance. Our tour guide, a staff member from the social services department, told us residents enjoy the "comfort food" that's served, although she personally prefers fewer carbs and less gravy in her diet! Residents participate in activities such as exercise, bingo, games, current events discussions and birthday celebrations in the larger dining room. Outings, like picnics at the beach and trips to nearby restaurants, offer a change of scenery. Accommodations are small, and the closet space is less than ideal. Every two rooms share a bathroom. Some have showers and there's also a communal shower room in the hallway. Although the rooms have a decidedly institutional feel, they are clean and well lit. Most staff members have been with the facility long-term. During our visit, we witnessed one endearing interaction that speaks to the closeness between residents and staff. A woman, whose husband was being moved to a different facility that accepts his new insurance, came over to say goodbye to our tour guide. She sang Culver West's praises, saying it was the best place for her husband and she'd recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.
