Country Villa Health Services operates thirty-seven health care centers, but their Mar Vista location is the only facility that specializes in dementia care. Staff members receive training on all forms of dementia and closely monitor wanderers and those who require more specialized care. Staff members also seemed caring and willing to go the extra mile whenever necessary. At one point in our tour, the director of nursing paused to speak French with one resident, who responded delightedly. The rehabilitation program is exceptional, offering orthopedic rehab for residents who have had back surgery, amputations or joint replacements, and neurological rehab for those with spinal cord injuries or Parkinson's disease. The program also provides wound care management and IV therapy. With respite care, case management and hospice services available, the facility is well equipped to address most resident needs. Country Villa Mar Vista Nursing Center sits on a quiet residential street. Bougainvillea climbs the building's exterior. Australian tree ferns, large palms, lush grass and a curved driveway mark the front. Residents can safely walk around the large backyard, which is enclosed by an eight-foot concrete wall and bedecked with beautiful plantings. A patio holds tables and chairs. A secured French door makes a quaint welcome at the facility's entrance. The small foyer has a country-style settee and a marble table. Fresh plants and silk flower arrangements spruce up the reception desk. Simple wallpaper, clean carpet and tasteful artwork contribute to the comfortable, homelike environment. One of two dining rooms doubles as an activity room. In the mornings, residents watch TV, have coffee and snacks, exercise and play games designed to be mentally stimulating. In the afternoons, residents may participate in bingo, arts and crafts, educational classes and music therapy. Activities accommodate the varied abilities and interests of residents. Outings often bring residents to shopping locations, but requests for other destinations are always welcome. Polaroid photographs of residents hang outside their rooms, which feature either patio access or a large window overlooking the garden.
