Clear signage marks County Villa Los Feliz, which is easily accessible from the freeway. The building sits recessed from the curb on a busy street. The surrounding neighborhood is safe. The local fire station is just a block away and Dodger Stadium a mere fifteen-minute ride. Markets, boutiques, restaurants and a coffee shop are all within walking distance—judging by the number of pedestrians we saw, people enjoy the local flavor. Outside, the facility is clean and well maintained, although the landscaping is sparse. The interior décor is simple but tasteful. Framed artwork hangs in the hallways. We saw quite a few talkative residents during our tour. Even individuals who appeared to be frail were up and engaged. In the common room, some residents watched TV, while others sat in wheelchairs in front of the large window—perfectly situated for admiring the hills. These same residents welcomed us with waves and smiles when we arrived at the facility. The comfortable room contains attractive furniture, a bookshelf, plants and a large fish tank, home to one very spoiled goldfish! Birthday parties and private family gatherings often have this room buzzing. We moved into the cheerful activity room, decorated with residents' artwork, just in time for "sittercize," a seated exercise class. The instructor got residents moving to the tune of lively music. With three meals and snacks served daily, there is plenty of opportunity to indulge after working up an appetite! Chicken, veggies and culturally diverse selections like egg foo yong, compose the menu. Other activities include a monthly resident council meeting, a monthly outing, tea and cookie socials, bingo, religious services, movies, happy hours and mah-jongg. There's also a small therapy room on-site. As we passed by resident rooms, many people looked out and waved. Staff members also had pleasant demeanors, creating an upbeat atmosphere. Each room houses up to three residents and is moderately sized, with plenty of space for personal items and even small furnishings. The furnishings look old and in need of replacement. Most rooms access one of the four outdoor courtyards. One patio is smoker friendly, and staffers make every effort to keep the other three smoke-free. The facility fosters family involvement through quarterly family council meetings.
