The Westside Adult Day Support Center is located in the Jewish Community Center. The brick-red building sits on a very busy street next to a large hospital. Bushes and trees frame the exterior, along with the security personnel who guard it. Inside is one rather diminutive room. A few round tables are scattered throughout the room and have colorful tablecloths with a cheery fruit design. A blue rug adds a splash of color to the floors. Walls are decorated with participants' arts and crafts, which add a homey touch. A small TV sits in one corner and another houses a piano. There is also an unfurnished balcony off to the side of the building.The calm atmosphere reminded us of a gathering of friends. During our tour, participants were sitting around a table, sipping coffee and reading the newspaper. Although immersed in the headlines, each participant managed to look up and greet us good morning. The staff was equally warm in their greetings—and throughout our tour. This is an intimate program with only a handful of participants; as such, specialized programming doesn't exist. The current offerings include singing, exercise, watching movies and listening to music. The atmosphere and program are perhaps best suited to participants who do not require a great deal of social interaction and prefer small groups. Access Services, a Paratransit provider, is utilized for transportation.
