The Silverlake Adult Day Health Care Center is perched on a hilltop overlooking the 101, about half a mile from Historical Filipinotown. The patio area in front of the building is reminiscent of an alfresco restaurant. There is a church on the second floor that is not affiliated with the center. As the facility mostly serves a Korean and Filipino population, it was not surprising that during our tour we heard the national anthem being sung in both languages as well as in English.The interior is cheerily decorated with participants' artwork; bright beautiful flowers hang on the walls. The main spaces include an activity room, kitchen and dining area, but a small room is reserved for napping, should participants grow weary. The kitchen is particularly eye-catching, with its stainless steel refrigerator and mahogany cabinets. Interestingly, the kitchen is hardly used; food is brought in from a Filipino restaurant called Pares Pares, which provides a special state-approved diet for diabetic and heart patients. The entertainment system includes a large TV with a karaoke machine and DVD player. The mini gym has a bike, treadmill and walking bars. Massage therapy is available. During our tour, we saw some participants singing and others playing mah-jongg, while still others were immersed in a crafts project. Any stragglers were encouraged by staff to join in. Other popular activities include bingo and dancing. Field trips occur only once a year, as some participants are frail. The staff was friendly and did a good job seeing to participants' needs. The program administrator seemed thrilled about her job: she even learned some foreign languages to help her communicate with participants in their native tongue!
