Partners Adult Day Health Care is located on a tree-lined portion of Santa Monica Boulevard. The neutral-colored building is brightened by a turquoise awning. Visitors must be buzzed in. The neighborhood is in desperate need of a face-lift and cleaning crew, but once inside, the atmosphere is welcoming and the interior is exceptionally clean. Walls are a peach shade and are decorated with impressionist-style paintings created by participants. In the activity room, a handful of goldfish carry on with their lives inside a small aquarium. A wooden upright piano and portable stereo system on a wooden ledge indicate activities with a musical bent on the schedule. Participants utilize this room for current events discussions and a variety of games as well as dining. The small gym sports a few pieces of equipment. A diminutive shaded patio is dominated by a round plastic table and its white chairs; a few plants are tucked around the edges. To the left of the entrance, a staircase leads to the second floor where the dementia programming takes place. Participants must be ambulatory. The program utilizes Wanderguard. Both a massage therapy and meditation room are located on this floor. The second-floor dining room, also used for activities, is cramped. Two round tables and black cushioned chairs seem to overwhelm the available space with its white tile flooring and earth-toned walls. Memory boxes line the walls and are filled with personal mementos from participants' lives. A few books support each other inside the wooden shelf. During our tour, participants were counting in Russian as part of an activity. Staffers were laughing and chatting with participants, getting each one to enjoy the activity. Most of the activities are focused on promoting cognitive function. Group sessions take place often.Throughout the entire tour, we noted how friendly staff members were in their interactions with participants. The programming seemed especially organized and geared to specific populations. The kosher food served at the facility is catered by Hirsch Kitchen. Physical, occupational and speech therapies are all offered.
