Optimistic People in a Caring Atmosphere (OPICA) is an apt description of this nonprofit organization. Founded by Yung-huo Liu, PhD, the center aims to follow Liu's vision of treating elders with dignity, love and care. The entire caregiving team demonstrates this philosophy through compassionate, conscientious actions. There were many spills during lunch and staffers did not make participants feel upset in any way. Considering that the facility caters to individuals with dementia, Parkinson's and stroke histories, this type of respect is vital. Several participants are over a hundred years old, but are still active and eager to be involved. The activity schedule includes adult education, aerobics, tai chi, golf, photography, cooking, dancing, movies, reminiscence exercises and poetry groups, as well as surfing the Internet. Talent shows are great fun for both participants and staff. Programming also includes intergenerational activities, support groups, private therapy and family counseling. Informational lectures on law, finance, insurance, gerontology and long-term care are open to the public. Situated in one corner of a large neighborhood park, there are many pleasant spots to lounge outdoors. An expansive adjacent patio contains umbrella-topped tables and a fantastic view of the grassy park. Inside, a sizable room accommodates both dining and activities. High windows and natural light illuminate tasteful framed artwork. One participant looked at ease, kicking back in a comfy reclining chair. Breakfast consists of muffins, rolls, bagels and hot beverages, and a hot lunch is served daily. The "blue room," named for its light blue walls, is a soothing spot with couches and comfortable chairs.
