Bethesda Christian Retirement Center is comprised of a cluster of buildings and twelve cottages that surround a grassy expanse. A majestic oak rises from the center of the lawn, which is reminiscent of a village green. We observed a handful of residents gardening in the private yards outside of their cottages. Between two and five residents share each of the sunny, recently remodeled homes. The floor plans and size of the homes vary. Residents provide their own furniture, although the facility can help with basic furnishings in a pinch. Bethesda accommodates a mix of assisted living and independent residents in its main building and cottages. The smaller homes are an ideal setup for married couples in which one spouse requires assistance with the activities of daily living while the other remains independent.

Chairs and couches furnish the small lobby of the main building, which houses two dining rooms and the skilled nursing unit. The attractive floral pattern on the curtains is echoed in the upholstered wooden chairs in the dining areas. Alternate entrées are always available during the family-style meals. Residents take part in piano recitals, nondenominational religious services and other large events in yet another building. Other popular activities include outdoor barbecues, mental and physical exercise, and outings to baseball games and scenic destinations.

Bethesda's administrator and staff focus on being aware of and meeting residents' needs. A number of staff members have worked there for over a decade, a strong indication of job satisfaction. The nonprofit organization offers discounted rates to residents who served as missionaries and ministers.
